Appearance characteristics
Body color: usually with bright red or orange-red markings, some individuals may have blue fin mutations (such as “blue fin red Shennong shrimp goby”).
Body size: It is a small shrimp goby, with a body length of about 3-6 cm, and some individuals may be slightly larger.
Distribution and habitat
Main distribution: streams and shallow areas in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian and other places.
Habitat characteristics: Prefer rapids and shallows, using ventral fin suction cups to attach to gravel to avoid being washed away by the current.
Current situation: Wild populations in some areas have decreased due to overfishing or environmental changes (for example, Hangzhou has reported a sharp decline in numbers).
Behavior and habits
Activity mode: Lying on the bottom of the water, occasionally swimming upstream, with a small range of activity (usually no more than 1 meter).
Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on small aquatic insects, algae and organic debris.
Feeding suggestions
Water temperature: The suitable temperature is 20-26℃, and it is necessary to simulate the stream environment (such as strong water flow and high dissolved oxygen).
Aquarium layout: It is recommended to use a sandy bottom bed + gravel to provide hiding space.
Note for mixed breeding: It may have a sense of territory and should be avoided from being mixed with aggressive fish.
The Shennong shrimp goby has a variable color. It is a small warm-water bottom fish that likes to live in rapids and shallow beaches. The snout is slightly drooping and stops at the base of the upper lip, but the male fish are brightly colored. It is a small bottom-dwelling carnivorous fish that likes to eat small invertebrates, such as small shrimps, small fish, and aquatic insects.
